Retiring in Florida (for at least part of the year)

As I am sitting here in South West Florida, spending my Canadian dollarettes, and watching the awful winter unfold “Up North”, I thought that I would send out this inspirational photo to encourage you to keep on investing wisely.

We are seriously looking at buying this year, after coming to Florida for the last ten years as short term renters. We just find that the weather in winter here is so nice, the people are so friendly and welcoming, and everyone is so active, that we want to be part of it to better enjoy our retirement years.

House prices here are not cheap, but neither are they anywhere near as high as Ottawa or Southern Ontario. US$400 k buys a very well finished 2000 sf bungalow backing onto a pond in a development with incredible activities and amenities all included. Think huge resort pool, tennis, gym, and a variety of classes. Twenty minutes to five different beaches. (Full disclosure – we were on Nokomis Beach Saturday afternoon with a 28C temperature).

Property taxes are about 1.25% of appraised value per year, and Home Owners Association fees which include all exterior ground maintenance (no grass to cut) are about $325 per month. Electricity is reasonable at around $120 per month considering that the AC has to run for at least 8 months of the year, which is less than I pay in Ottawa.

So keep investing and generate more US$ so that you too can escape winter, or at least some of it.

  1. First Michael … Happy 2020, Santé, Bonheur, Prospérité et Longévité. Enjoy the +C weather. There is no luck; everything happens when a good preparation meets an opportunity. Since I became a DIY PF manager in 3 months only and following the rules I learned from your lectures my PF has increased by 4.8%/3 months. Mostly ETF, some FNV, VGRO and a few Stocks. Again, thank you for your commitment to your fellow retirees. You are the light at the end of the investment tunnel. As for me I spent a few months in Mexico (Ajijic) and going to Lima Peru in February. Be careful out there … The very best to you and your family, Gilbert Anctil
